What Type of Mortar Is Used in Chimneys?

Masonry Chimney Repair Tips

The kind of mortar used in brick chimney construction does have a significant impact on its durability and performance of it. Mortar selection is extremely important with chimneys, due to the temperature changes and exposure to elements. Before you either build or perform any masonry chimney repair jobs, first take the time to choose a mortar that will allow you to maximize its strength, performance, and aesthetic appeal.

Mortar

There are 4 basic types of mortar that are used in brick and stone construction. Which are N, S, and M, which are used for new work, and Type O, which is used for repairs and interior projects. Always use Type N mortar for all projects unless there is a good reason not to. This can include severe exposure or any other unusual circumstances. For basic chimney applications, use Type N mortar.

Composition

The U.S. National Parks Service advises that Type N mortar be used for the majority of chimney applications. They describe Type N as a mixture of 1 part cement, 1 part of lime and 5 – 6 parts of sand. For extreme weather applications, use Type S mortar which is made from 1 part cement, 1/2 part lime, and 4 – 4-1/2 parts of sand.

Chimney Repair

Chimney repair projects will often need a slightly different mortar mix. Before trying this kind of project, first, remove any loose or damaged mortar to create a 1-inch space in the remaining mortar. Look for a specially-prepared mortar mix for chimneys from your hardware or home improvement store and fill these gaps in using it.
