Brickwork Methods and Techniques

What Is the Strongest Brick Bond?

What Is Brick Bond?

This is the pattern that brickwork is laid. It can be defined also as an arrangement of bricks in wall construction, which is known as brick bonds. There are various bonds used in brick masonry, and each one will have its own look, installation issues, and in the case of walls, structural factors to consider. Most importantly, bonds call for bricks that are similar size or at least compatible sizes.

Brick masonry is done by placing units side by side and on top of one another, with the aid of mortar. All historical buildings show evidence of the different ways to use brick masonry.

Uniform sizing will create a regular, repeatable pattern that can be created over any area size. Many bond patterns use an interlocking design on each row of brick, which are called a course, to neighboring courses.

Brick masonry strength hinges on the bond and materials used, as they play an important role when it comes to providing stability, strength, and durability to the brick masonry.

Bonds in masonry construction are categorized based on what laying and bonding pattern was used. It is created by the mortar filling installed between the bricks, the most commonly used is mortar, lime mortar, and mud mortar.

Stretcher Bond

This is when bricks are laid horizontally and flat, and the long side, known as the stretcher is lengthwise, this method is often called a running bond.

The limitation of this method is it is unable to create an effective and strong bond with adjacent bricks. They are best suited for one-half brick thick walls like partitions. Walls built using this method are simply not strong enough to stand by themselves.
